Greetings and Welcome to Harvard School of Excellence

As an educational community, at Harvard School of Excellence we are dedicated to reaching our full potential and believe that learning requires self-esteem, personal effort, mutual respect, a safe orderly environment adequate resources, and clear goals. We will continue our mission to prepare students to be competitive in an ever-changing global society. We have enthusiastic and highly qualified teachers. The development of skills and access to technology are essential to our goal of growing young leaders who can access information and learn the necessary critical-thinking skills demanded in a global society.

We believe learning is a journey. Students’ progress through their journey at different paces. The statewide NWEA testing program is one measure that we use at Harvard to gauge the progress of our students in their journey. In addition to the NWEA, teachers use a variety of other assessment tools in the classroom, including Fountas and Pinnell reading level tests, research projects and the district writing sample. The results from these assessments are used to differentiate the instruction for individual students to ensure we meet them where they are and guide them forward in their learning.

We look forward to working in partnership with you to support our students in their journey as learners. If you have questions about our school, please feel free to contact us through e-mail, phone, or in person. Have a wonderful year!

Our History

Building on Our History to
Create a Culture of Excellence

john-harvard.jpg

Harvard School of Excellence is named in honor of John Harvard (1607-1638), an English minister in America whose deathbed bequest led to the naming of Harvard University also in his honor.

Harvard School of Excellence opened in its current building in 1905. The building originally contained 12 classrooms and an assembly hall. A gymnasium was added in 1927.

The school was originally known as Lake District #2 School and was housed in a 4-classroom building built in 1889 that was razed for the present building.

A 13-classroom addition was added to the north side of the building in 1960. The additional space included a kindergarten, library, and office, and helped ease crowding at Harvard and nearby schools.

The building was renovated in 2007 and is now fully accessible. Today, the building contains 27.5 classrooms and serves 450 students.

AUSL

AUSL (Academy for Urban School Leadership) is a Chicago nonprofit school management organization that creates schools of excellence by developing highly effective teachers and transforming educational outcomes for students in the lowest performing schools.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) turned over management of Harvard School of Excellence to AUSL in 2007 as a turnaround school. Turning around a school is one approach that CPS uses to improve neighborhood schools that have been failing for many years. The transformation begins with the new leadership and teachers in the building to deliver effective instruction and the right climate and culture to the same neighborhood students.

AUSL is committed to to providing all AUSL students with a quality education to prepare them for college and career.
